Originally designed in 1937 for Royal Air Force pilots flying open-cockpit fighters, the RAF Sheepskin Bomber Jacket incorporates a modification that sets it apart from the American B-3: pilots discovered the original B-3’s extremely thick shearling restricted movement inside the tight cockpits of Spitfires and Hurricanes, so had their jackets trimmed down. Cockpit USA replicates that field-modified silhouette — short-sheared sheepskin that maintains warmth without the bulk that limited the B-3 in a fighter cockpit.

The short shearing also makes the RAF more compatible with layering — a sweater or mid-layer fits underneath without the jacket becoming unwearable. Buckle throat latch, back collar strap beneath the RAF patch, underarm ventilation grommets, leather waist belt, and heavy-duty zipper cuffs. As the shearling ages, it develops antiqued patina with natural highs and lows in the wool. Made in the USA.
